WHAT BIRD WOULD I BE
Author: C.A Rizzo
If I were a bird, of an older age, I’d reminisce of those bygone migratory days….
I’d have a whirlwind of tales of flying on the wing to unveil –
How about all those yearly traipses from one end of the world to the other?
They would spin your head to no end in mileage, that is, dear brother!
Fattening myself up to make the long journey almost to the point of being placed on a gurney!
Ha, no girlish figure here to maintain, as this was not part of the migratory campaign.
Now to address all those lurking predators that waited to pounce –
Constant vigilance, always with one eye open, was my best flying aid I’d announce.
Being swept up while perched on a branch could be shocking and indignant,
But being plucked from the open sky, thousands of feet up, is to the delight of the assailant.
Weather was always fickle -
Dare you to name some different fronts and I’ll give you a nickel.
Blazing sun rays, torrential rains, roaring winds, pounding hale all had their way.
At times my flying companions and I were forced to hunker down at the first sight of refuge, any time of day.
So, you see that flying long distances can be a source of many perils and challenges along the way,
Especially for this little body like mine in the unique transoceanic flyway.
Please help our young ones in their future trips with these aids at your fingertips…
Keep the night sky dark so the stars can be light as a field mark.
Provide feeding/watering/resting oases for balanced homeostases.
Support our native habitats with plants and sustained mudflats.
Monitor our Carbon footprint so we all can leave a healthy imprint.
Warbly yours,
